Dwayne Johnson
Biographie
Descendant d’une lignée de catcheurs professionnels (son père et son grand-père ont tous deux combattu sur les rings de la World Wrestling Federation), Dwayne Johnson se destine dès son plus jeune âge à une carrière sportive. Remarqué au lycée puis à l’université pour ses qualités de défenseur au football américain, il rejoint les rangs des Calgary Stampeders dans le championnat canadien de 1995. Mais, victime d’une blessure, il s'oriente finalement vers la discipline qui fera sa gloire : le catch. Dwayne Johnson fait ses débuts sur le ring de la WWF en novembre 1996 sous le nom de Rocky Maivia et devient à 24 ans le plus jeune champion intercontinental. Après une absence consécutive à une blessure, il revient sous le nom de The Rock. Triple champion du monde, champion intercontinental et champion par équipe, il domine la discipline et devient un personnage inévitable du petit écran, multipliant, outre ses apparitions sur le ring, publicités et petits rôles dans des séries télévisées (notamment un épisode de Star Trek : Voyager et un autre de That 70's Show dans lequel il interprète son propre père, le catcheur Rocky Johnson). En 2001, The Rock fait ses débuts sur grand écran dans Le Retour de la momie. Le succès de ce blockbuster est tel que l’acteur bodybuildé reprend l’année suivante le rôle du Roi Scorpion dans le film éponyme de Chuck Russell. Formaté roi de la castagne, il prend explicitement la relève d’Arnold Schwarzenegger dans le registre de l’action avec la comédie d’aventure Bienvenue dans la jungle (2004), bientôt suivie du film de baston Tolérance zéro (id.) et de l’adaptation du jeu vidéo Doom (2005). Ne souhaitant pas rester cantonné aux personnages de brute épaisse, il fait preuve d’autodérision en incarnant un garde du corps gay dans Be cool (2005), la suite de Get shorty, et en prêtant main forte à Max la menace, alias Steve Carell. Évitant de se prendre au sérieux, Dwayne Johnson joue également dans des films destinés à toute la famille. Il commence en 2007 avec Maxi Papa, le rôle d’un quarterback qui découvre qu’il a une fille d’une précédente relation, puis continue avec une voix pour le film d’animation Planète 51. En 2009, il tient le rôle principal de La Montagne ensorcelée, qui le voit aider deux enfants dans le pétrin, et joue une fée en rédemption, qui collecte les dents de lait des enfants dans Fée malgré lui (2010). Le comédien marque son retour aux films musclés lorsqu’il forme un duo de choc au destin tragi-comique dans Very Bad Cops, réalisé par Adam McKay. Il revient l’année suivante à son personnage-type de gros bras peu finaud dans Faster, avant de jouer un policier teigneux dans Fast and Furious 5 (2011), 6, 7 et 8. Toujours en 2013, Dwayne Johnson est à l’affiche de plusieurs autres films (très) musclés, à savoir Infiltré, G.I. Joe : Conspiration et No Pain No Gain où il livre une prestation étonnante. L’année suivante, l’ex-catcheur prête son physique imposant au demi-dieu Hercule sous la direction de Brett Ratner.
